The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, is working to strengthen the air connectivity of Lanzarote with airlines of greater strategic value and profitability for the destination, such as British Airways, Iberia, or North American airlines.
The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has commented on Ryanair’s decision to reduce some of its operations in the Canary Islands, emphasising that the impact on the island of Lanzarote will be minimal.
According to the data, Lanzarote will decrease from 135 weekly flights in last winter’s season to 131 this winter, which is a reduction of only four weekly flights.
Regarding routes, Ryanair will go from 40 connections to 35, cancelling routes such as Marseille, Luton, Turin, Barcelona, and the African city of Dakhla. However, a new connection with Alicante will be introduced, and frequencies on several routes to the mainland will be increased, largely compensating for the loss.
“The actual effect on Lanzarote is practically insignificant, both in terms of flights and connectivity. This is a historical pressure tactic that the airline has maintained with the Spanish State, linked to AENA rates and disputes with competition and consumer authorities,” emphasised Betancort.
The president recalled that while “no tourist is unwelcome, and we should never be pleased with route reductions,” the Cabildo is working to enhance Lanzarote’s air connectivity with airlines that offer higher strategic value and profitability for the destination, such as British Airways, Iberia, and North American airlines.
“Our goal is to diversify markets and attract a visitor profile that increases average spending at the destination, bringing greater wealth to the island and creating more sustainable tourism over time,” added Betancort.
