The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has approved the contracting file and the specifications for the new pump track to be built in the sports area of the Los Gladiolos neighbourhood.

The initiative has a budget of €1,746,667.93 and a construction period of 12 months. It will be financed by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Tenerife Cabildo.

This will be the first installation of its kind in the capital, designed as a circuit for the practice of wheeled sports such as skating, skateboarding, cycling, and scootering, complemented by green spaces, shaded areas, and recreational spaces accessible to the public.

The Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, emphasised that “with the construction of the pump track in Los Gladiolos, we continue to invest in providing the city with modern and attractive infrastructures for sports practice. This will be a meeting space for leisure and a healthy lifestyle that reinforces Santa Cruz’s commitment to sports and its neighbourhoods.”

The Sports Councillor, Alicia Cebrián, highlighted the significance of the new facility, stating, “We are very excited about this project. We will create the first sports track for skating and skateboarding in the capital, which will also be open to bicycles and scooters. Furthermore, the pump track will include smaller areas for public recreation and traditional sports, as well as green and shaded zones.”

Project Details

According to the councillor, the installation will be organised into three designated areas, designed for various sliding sports such as skateboarding, BMX, roller skating, and scootering. One area will be dedicated to BMX and the pump track and will also feature a 3×3 basketball court and a building hosting restrooms, an office, and storage.

Another area will include an outdoor initiation and training pump track, catering for all ages. Finally, there will be an open skating track, as detailed by Alicia Cebrián.

Inclusion and Variety

The councillor emphasised that “this arrangement offers a variety of options regarding urban wheeled sports. The project addresses the need to move beyond traditional dedicated courts and instead promotes an inclusive, diverse, and attractive sports offering for children, youth, and adults, providing the city with a complementary space to La Granja Park or the Avenue of Anaga.”

The new facility will encourage collaboration with local sports clubs, which can use it for training and competitions, ensuring responsible and continuous use. Moreover, daily management will be handled by auxiliary staff responsible for opening and closing the facilities.

The installation will be located next to the sports courts of Los Gladiolos, enhancing the sporting facilities in the neighbourhood and reinforcing the municipal strategy of bringing sports to all districts of the city.
