The Cabildo of Fuerteventura and Red.es, an entity affiliated with the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration through the Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, have reported positive outcomes from the actions carried out within the Smart Island Fuerteventura project. This was announced by the Councillor for Strategic Projects, Carmen Alonso, alongside representatives from Red.es, during a Monitoring Committee meeting of the collaboration agreement held in Madrid.
Attendees at the committee included Councillor Carmen Alonso and the Director of RedIRIS and Digital Public Services at Red.es, Francisco Javier García Vieira. Also present were Elena González Miguel, Deputy Director of Smart Cities at Red.es, and Raúl Ballesta, Associate Director of Smart Cities at Red.es.
Smart Island Completes 13 Innovative Projects
The Smart Island Fuerteventura project, promoted by the Cabildo, has successfully completed a total of thirteen initiatives aimed at transforming Fuerteventura into a smart island in terms of technology and management. These actions, supported by an agreement between the Cabildo and Red.es, are part of the Smart Islands Programme under Spain’s Digital Agenda. Smart Island Fuerteventura has also won the ‘Smart City’ award at the 10th edition of the enerTIC Awards 2022.
Investment and Economic Impact
The initiative has received a budget of €6.5 million, fully funded by Red.es and financed with FEDER funds. These actions have improved digital public services and local public administration, reducing the environmental footprint of bureaucratic procedures, lowering costs, and streamlining management times. Additionally, the transparency of the administration has increased, making it more accessible and user-friendly for citizens.
Collaboration from all local municipalities, the private sector, and other economic and social agents has been instrumental in this success.
Innovative Tools for Fuerteventura
Thanks to Smart Island Fuerteventura, Councillor Carmen Alonso highlighted that the island now features pioneering tools, such as the Data Processing Centre (DPC), which serves as a cornerstone of the project. This high-tech system houses the servers for all local administrations, facilitating the digitalisation of public services and offering opportunities for businesses wishing to establish themselves in Fuerteventura.
Furthermore, the actions undertaken as part of Smart Island Fuerteventura have led to the digitalisation of seven local government meetings and the establishment of an electronic processing platform for various administrative management processes implemented across different local administrations.
Conclusion
Smart Island has successfully completed thirteen innovative projects in Fuerteventura.
