The central government will cover the substantial cost of launching the two trains that the Cabildo of Tenerife is promoting on the island. This Thursday, a protocol for the construction of these infrastructures in Tenerife was signed, which will be funded by the State General Budgets. It is currently estimated that the cost of constructing the southern train will exceed 950 million euros.

Present at the signing were the Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano, the Canary Islands Government’s Minister for Public Works, Pablo Rodríguez, and the President of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, who confirmed the protocol alongside the Minister for Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.

The protocol signed this Thursday is a crucial step towards the construction of the infrastructure. However, the island administration still needs to present the two projects, and a contract must be signed outlining the multi-year funding allocated to each train.

Work to Be Done

To ratify this agreement, the island administration must still present how the two projects will proceed. The southern train is the more advanced of the two planned by the island’s authority. Initially, the 79-kilometre route had already passed the environmental evaluation process, but its expiration has necessitated it to undergo this administrative procedure again.

The intention of the Cabildo de Tenerife is to complete the project within a year and a half, at least for the first phase, which runs between San Isidro and Costa Adeje. The second phase of construction, to follow in the future, will cover the work between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Isidro. The initial forecast for the cost of the infrastructure is around 950 million euros.

Much less developed is the proposal for the construction of the northern train. The companies Sener, Ardanuy Ingeniería, and the Consultans-Transconsult alliance are still developing the project, as they were the only firms to respond to the design competition launched by the Cabildo de Tenerife.
