The film La Lucha by José Alayón, filmed entirely in Fuerteventura, premiered successfully at the 73rd San Sebastián Film Festival, one of the most prestigious film events in the world. This weekend, the premiere received support from the Fuerteventura Film Commission and its councillor Nereida Calero, highlighting the significance of this release for the island and for productions shot in the Majoreran territory. The film ‘La Lucha’ sees a successful premiere at the San Sebastián Festival.

This is the first film shot entirely in Fuerteventura to be showcased at the Donostia festival. Directed by José Alayón, the film is a 100% Canary Islands production, created by the production company ‘El Viaje Films’. It features mostly debut and non-professional actors, many of whom are real wrestlers, following a twelve-month casting process directed by Cendrine Lapuyade. Additionally, 400 extras from Fuerteventura participated, reflecting the authenticity and strength of the local community.

The filming took place between February and March 2024, across various locations in the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario, Pájara, Tuineje, and Antigua.

Until now, cinema had not deeply explored the world surrounding the traditional sport of Canarian wrestling. Therefore, the release of this feature film has served to promote Canarian and Majoreran identity and culture. In fact, an exhibition of this sport was organised by the Government of the Canary Islands at Zurriola Beach, located in front of the Kursaal Congress Palace and Auditorium (the festival venue).
