Taiwanese and Tenerife Dances Combine at the Auditorium for the Premiere of Blurred Fish

The companies of Carmen Fumero and Chang Dance Theatre are presenting two performances this weekend

The companies of Carmen Fumero and Chang Dance Theatre are joining forces for the premiere of Blurred Fish. This new production, which marks the start of the 2025-2026 season at the Auditorio de Tenerife, can be seen on Saturday (6th) and Sunday (7th) at 19:30 in the Sinfónica Hall. Tickets for both performances are already on sale for a flat price of 15 euros.

This performance is a co-production between the Auditorio de Tenerife and Ritmos del Mundo Asociación, with collaboration from Chang Dance Studio, Centro Coreográfico Canal, and Centro Cultural Eduardo Úrculo.

The artistic direction of Blurred Fish is led by Carmen Fumero and Miguel Zomas, while the choreography is attributed to the Tenerife native. The piece features performances by Dácil González, Chien-Hao Chang, Chien-Chih Chang, Ho-Chien Chang, Carmen Fumero, and Miguel Zomas. The musical composition is by Iván Cebrián, lighting design by Alfredo Díez, and the costumes are designed by Yaiza Pinillos.

Carmen Fumero believes that “Blurred Fish represents a pivotal moment in our artistic journey as a company” and adds that this performance “comes at an important time for us.” She also appreciates the co-production with the Auditorio de Tenerife. Fumero concludes by praising the venue, stating that “premiering in a place like the Sinfónica Hall allows us to grow as creators.”

Miguel Zomas expresses excitement about the premiere, acknowledging that “to be able to perform at the Auditorio de Tenerife is significantly tied to having access to resources,” and adds that “this will allow the work to be born under optimal conditions for it to grow in the healthiest way possible.”

Dácil González, winner of the National Dance Award in 2019, states that for her “it is a gift to be part of this production of Blurred Fish under the direction of Carmen Fumero and Miguel Zomas.” The Canary Island dancer considers the experience to be “a very enriching process, being able to share it with them and the members of the Taiwanese company Chang Dance Theatre.”

González notes that “finding a common language between two such different cultures is incredibly interesting; they are all brilliant travel companions and truly inspiring,” adding that “it is very special for us to have the support of the Auditorio de Tenerife, and being able to premiere here makes us feel at home.”

Blurred Fish serves as a metaphor highlighting the blurry and unspoken aspects of life, akin to peering into a pond in search of fish, where the swimming creatures reflect how people experience the world: blurry on the surface, yet profound and orderly beneath. From these traces springs the water that nurtures life, that movement. Here, walking almost merges with swimming. Something becomes blurred, dissolves, yet remains.

Many constellations can form within a space, a pond, and numerous colour combinations can emerge from a union with another. The creatures in this portrayal appear submerged in that vast empty space. However, when observing these fish, their presence immediately relates to the water: do not speak of the sea to a pond fish.

Founded in 2011 in Taipei, Chang Dance Theatre consists of four siblings—Chien-Hao, Chien-Chih, Chien-Kuei, and Ho-Chien—who are all graduates of the Department of Dance at the National University of the Arts in Taipei. This unique familial bond results in a distinctive artistic proposal, where blood ties intertwine with a performance language rich in sensitivity, collaboration, and shared identity. Beyond their work as a company, the Chang siblings also perform as freelance dancers both nationally and internationally, with their company evolving into a space where the roles of creator and performer merge, promoting interdisciplinary experimentation. Their works testify to a sincere dance, full of humanity, where each piece embodies fragments of their life stories.

The meeting between Chang Dance Theatre and the Carmen Fumero Company developed naturally, through intersections at festivals and choreographic competitions across Spain and Europe. In 2019, both companies met at a gala, sharing a tour in Taiwan and Malaysia that laid the foundation for a deep bond. A year later, Miguel Zomas was invited to Taipei to participate in the piece The Face, marking the first joint creative experience. In 2023, this camaraderie evolved into direct collaboration on the project Blurred Fish, where the human and artistic affinity between both groups served as the impetus for a shared creation. They are united by a common vision of dance: honest, organic, and focused on connection.

Tickets, priced at 15 euros for general admission and 5 euros for those under 30, can be purchased on the Auditorio de Tenerife website, at the box office Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00, or by calling 902 317 327 during the same hours.
