The Department of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility has begun the tender process for the drafting of an informative study aimed at improving accessibility to the Port of Los Cristianos in Arona from the TF-1 motorway.

The contract, initiated by the Directorate General of Road Infrastructure, has a base budget of €597,898.59 and seeks to update and define a comprehensive proposal that addresses accessibility issues in this area of southern Tenerife.

Project Objectives

The initiative aims to establish alternatives that ensure an adequate level of service between the port and the high-capacity network, considering it is one of the general interest ports with the highest passenger traffic in Spain.

Among the proposed solutions is the design of a direct connection tunnel between the dock and Avenue Chayofita, intended to channel port traffic more efficiently.

Technical Considerations

The project includes plans for the new underground access to cross a volcanic cone of pyroclasts with surface constructions, necessitating a thorough study of technical feasibility and preliminary ground treatments to ensure the safety of existing properties and facilities.

The study will encompass a geological and geotechnical assessment of the land, a traffic analysis of all roads converging in the intervention area, and a campaign of traffic counts. Additionally, the level of service for each road will be evaluated to select, through a multi-criteria analysis, the most suitable alternative from functional, economic, and environmental perspectives.

Assessment of Alternatives

The proposed improvements in the study will include an estimation of the level of service for each of the considered roads, aiming to select the optimal alternative based on a multi-criteria analysis that will take into account functional, economic, and environmental aspects, among others. The option deemed most recommendable will be developed in subsequent design and construction projects.

The drafting of the informative study and the design and construction projects will receive a €5 million contribution from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
