Agreement Reached for Shared National Volcano Centre in Canary Islands

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 3 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Collaboration Between Tenerife and La Palma

The councils of Tenerife and La Palma have reached an agreement to jointly host the National Centre for Volcanology, following the model of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), after the central government initiated the process.

This was announced by the president of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, during a press conference. She indicated that La Palma will house the administrative headquarters, while Tenerife will focus on research efforts, benefiting from the island’s “extensive experience” in volcanology, alongside other organisations such as Involcan, IGME, and IGN.

Strengthening the Candidacy

“We believe we can present a stronger bid. Our role is to collaborate, and we will communicate this to the Government of the Canary Islands to ensure that the candidacy we put forward is as robust as possible, to keep the National Centre for Volcanology in the Canary Islands rather than letting it go to any other location in the country,” she emphasised.

According to Dávila, the key to guaranteeing the success of the bid lies in unity, stating, “It is not about rivalry or separate bids, but rather a joint candidacy,” especially following the ‘Tajogaite’ eruption, which has significantly impacted the island’s economy.

Support for La Palma’s Economic Development

She underscored that Tenerife must “support” La Palma to enhance its economic development.

“By working together, we can create a stronger region, better defend the Canary Islands, and thus the importance of this historic agreement to ensure the National Centre for Volcanology remains in the Canary Islands, and that our candidacy is indisputable and considerably stronger,” she explained.
