The Cabildo of Tenerife Encourages Educational Institutions to Participate in the 2025-2026 Azagal Youth Literature Prize

The Azagal Prize is the most prestigious youth literature award in the national sphere and is part of the Insular Reading Promotion and Study Techniques Programme (PIALTE)

The Cabildo of Tenerife, through its Education and Youth department, invites educational institutions across the island to actively participate in the 2025-2026 Azagal Youth Literature Prize, as the process has taken a significant step forward with the selection of the three finalist works.

Efraín Medina, the Councillor for Employment and Education, emphasised that “the objectives of the Azagal Prize are to educate young readers with critical thinking, give them a voice by appointing them as judges for a literary award, create spaces for debate and reflection where they can share their thoughts on narrative, writing and values, as well as provide a platform for young writers to showcase their texts.” He also highlighted that this award stands out from other literary competitions because the winner will be chosen directly by the participating students, rather than by a panel of experts.

The selected titles are: ‘Terradraga’ by Arden Montag, ‘Han Cantado Bingo’ by Lana Corujo, and ‘Intruso’ by David Lozano. The selection was made by the Azagal Promotional Group, which comprises 18 individuals, including young members from the Reading Committees and professionals associated with literature and education, such as teachers, writers, editors, pedagogues, journalists, and librarians.

The Azagal Prize is the most important youth literature award in the national context and is part of the Insular Reading Promotion and Study Techniques Programme (PIALTE). Its goals include fostering a reading habit, promoting youth participation, creating dialogue spaces about literature, and incorporating content related to the Canary Islands, in line with the LOMLOE.

The Cabildo reminds that the involvement of educational institutions is crucial in this initiative, as students are not only transformed into judges but also into central figures in a process that will culminate in May 2026 with the announcement of the winning work.
