The Tenerife Cabildo will invest over €20 million in strategic projects aimed at modernising the irrigation systems in the Güímar Valley.

The councillor for the Primary Sector, Valentín González, explained on Friday the 19th during a plenary session that the council is working on several initiatives with the objective of “consolidating and improving the irrigation systems in the Güímar Valley, within the municipalities of Güímar, Arafo, and Candelaria, through the implementation of various initiatives, such as the delivery and pumping centre at the regional wastewater treatment plant, the pumping main (from the pumping centre to the reservoir for reclaimed water), the reservoir for reclaimed water, and the distribution irrigation network.”

The councillor added that “due to the complexity involved in establishing a reservoir with a capacity of 100,000 cubic metres, this aspect has been separated from the distribution network project to avoid delaying its implementation.”

The Tenerife Cabildo has requested the inclusion of the reservoir, with a budget of €5.4 million, in the Tenerife Hydrological Plan Third Cycle. This request ensures that this infrastructure will serve as the head of the irrigation network, with a defined location and elevation.

In parallel, the island institution is promoting the development of the water distribution network, which involves an investment of €15 million and will be executed in different phases to meet the consumption needs of the area.

Additionally, a project for desalinating reclaimed water is also planned, with an estimated budget of €745,000.
