Rosa Dávila Welcomes State Funding for Tenerife Airport Projects “After More Than 20 Years of Struggle”
The investments in the two airports exceed 800 million euros and will enhance connectivity for Tenerife residents with the mainland.
The President of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, expressed her satisfaction upon learning that the investment proposal by Aena for the Spanish airport network between 2027 and 2031 (DORA III) includes improvement projects for the two airports on the island.
“These are two strategic investments that are fundamental for our island’s development and represent a significant turning point,” explained Dávila. She noted that the enhancement projects for the two Canary airports will involve an investment of over 800 million euros. “Specifically, the Tenerife Sur Airport will receive 550 million euros, allowing for the complete refurbishment of the terminal, resulting in a fully functional, modern airport. Meanwhile, Tenerife Norte Airport will see over 250 million euros allocated for an expansion that connects all Canarians between the islands and with the mainland, which has already become insufficient due to the increase in connections.”
Additionally, Rosa Dávila celebrated the inclusion of these two projects in a document like DORA III. “After more than 20 years of struggle, we have achieved this milestone, ensuring that the investments Tenerife needs and deserves are now included in this strategic document.”
Expansion Projects
For the Tenerife Sur Airport, a total investment of 550 million euros is planned for a comprehensive redevelopment of the Terminal Area. This project will increase capacity and enhance service quality through process optimisation, the incorporation of new technologies, and architectural integration of the building, reinforcing its role as the gateway to and from the island. The intervention will result in an almost 50% increase in surface area, which includes improving the façade facing the access roads, a new check-in area, and a remote boarding lounge.
At Tenerife Norte Airport, the investment amounts to 250 million euros and will encompass the expansion of the terminal building, with a surface area increase of over 40%, while respecting the architectural uniqueness of the structure and improving efficiency. This will include optimising key processes: more check-in counters, expanded security checks, additional boarding gates, and new baggage claim conveyors. Additionally, there will be a reorganisation of parking and access, incorporating long-term parking, rental car spaces, employee parking, and public transport, coordinated with the improvement of the TF-5 motorway.
