The Cabildo Reinforces Training with the Preventive School of Healthy Habits
Over 1,500 people have participated in three of the six planned activities for this year
The Preventive School of the Cabildo de Tenerife, a pioneering project promoting training and education for the prevention of various diseases, is establishing itself at the regional level as one of the most significant training offerings in prevention across the Canary Islands. This initiative, driven by the Department of Education for Prevention in partnership with the Canary Islands School of Health and Social Services (ESSSCAN)—which falls under the Department of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands—has already conducted three out of the six planned activities for this year, gathering approximately 1,500 professional participants from various islands of the archipelago.
Activities Held
Among the activities held are the ‘Workshop for the Prevention of Obesity and Management of Diabetes by Patients, Families, and Community’, the ‘Workshop for the Prevention of Behavioural Addictions or Substance Abuse’, and the ‘Island Conference for the Prevention of Addictions in Tenerife’, which has become its most attended event with over a thousand professionals from all the islands in attendance.
Comments from the Councillor
The Councillor for Education for Prevention at the Cabildo de Tenerife, Juan Acosta, emphasises that “prevention cannot be understood without visibility, awareness, training, or education. These events not only educate professionals but also serve as powerful platforms that raise public consciousness about the key health challenges we face in the Canary Islands. They have become true forums for dialogue and reflection, where professionals from various disciplines and interested citizens gather to work towards a common goal: improving the health of our people.”
A Dynamic Project
The Preventive School of the Cabildo is a living and dynamic project that addresses different significant issues in public health each year. It offers two main formats: the conference format, which provides high-level theoretical content delivered by leading professionals in the Canary Islands, and the workshop format, featuring a smaller number of participants and a more practical, dynamic approach that encourages interaction and direct application of acquired knowledge.
All activities are free of charge, aimed at all professionals and interested citizens, and are accredited and recognised by the Teacher Improvement Service of the Department of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands and by the Canary Islands Commission for the Accreditation of Continuing Education for Health Professions of the Canary Health Service, ensuring a high academic standard and the involvement of leading experts in each field.
Upcoming Activities at the Preventive School
This edition continues with new activities scheduled for 17th September with the ‘Workshop for the Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections’, on 8th and 9th October with the ‘Island Conference for the Prevention of Mental Health Disorders’, and on 16th October with the ‘Workshop for the Prevention of Mental Health Disorders’. All of these address current issues such as the rise in cases of anxiety, depression, and sexually transmitted infections, particularly affecting young and elderly individuals.
Looking Ahead to 2026
In preparation for 2026, the Preventive School is organising new days, including the ‘Island Conference for Cancer Prevention’ and the ‘Island Conference on Chronic, Emerging and Rare Diseases’, with the firm aim of raising awareness, educating, and promoting a culture of prevention across all areas of society. Registrations for activities and more information about the Preventive School can be found on the ESSSCAN website (click here).
