The emergence of seaweed is part of a natural process that typically occurs before episodes of coastal upwelling.
Impact on Fuerteventura’s Northern Coast
It is not the first time that the northern coast of Fuerteventura has become a mass of seaweed, referred to locally as ‘ceba’, which accumulates in the intertidal zone, particularly during high tide when it is deposited at the uppermost part of the coastline.
Odour and Marine Life Concerns
Currently, the smell in parts of the coastline is repugnant due to the decay of this seaweed, which originates from the seabed. Besides the issue of the odour, the presence of the seaweed also presents an unsightly image of the coast, while marine species suffer as they cannot access clean and navigable spaces.
Natural Phenomenon with Increasing Intensity
It is true that this is a natural phenomenon, which is becoming increasingly virulent. Authorities are expected to announce a cleaning operation to at least clear the bathing areas.
