Enjoying the sea without leaving your pet at home is possible in Tenerife. Although the island’s regulations restrict the presence of animals in most bathing areas, the Island has several officially designated dog beaches, where dogs can run, play, and swim freely.

The Cabildo de Tenerife and several local councils have designated specific spaces for both pets and their owners to enjoy together without fines or conflicts with other bathers.

Currently, four municipalities have taken this step, where dogs are permitted to bathe:

  • Playa El Cabezo (Güímar): located on the east coast, it was a pioneer in opening a section exclusively for pets. It is a quiet place, with easy access and enough space for animals to enjoy alongside their owners.
  • Playa de El Confital (Granadilla de Abona): situated in the south, very close to the Montaña Roja de El Médano, it is one of the favourites among dog lovers due to its size and natural surroundings. Here, pets have an area designed just for them.
  • Playa de El Calla/Las Bajas (Arona): This stretch of the Canary coastline stands out for preserving its natural charm, adorned by the combination of sand and stones, along with vegetation and geological structures that have remained over time. If you decide to visit Las Bajas with your pet, it is important to remember to keep it clean, as owners are responsible for picking up their droppings, as well as respecting the environment and the coexistence of all who wish to enjoy the beach.
  • Playa de las Gaviotas (Santa Cruz de Tenerife): Very close to the famous Las Teresitas, it is a unique spot characterised by its volcanic black sand and the imposing cliffs that surround it. It is a perfect location for those seeking a more natural atmosphere away from the crowds. Since 2024, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Council has designated a specific area for dogs, making it the first dog beach in the municipality. This zone, located at the very end of the beach, is clearly marked and equipped for both animals and their owners to enjoy the sea with all assurances.

Animal activist groups and neighbourhood associations have been calling for an expansion of the network of dog-friendly beaches, reminding that the Island has more than 300 kilometres of coastline and only these areas are designated for pets.

Meanwhile, local councils remind that the use of these spaces involves responsibility and basic rules of coexistence: always pick up the droppings, have the vaccination record in order, and keep the animal under control to avoid incidents.

Although there are still few, these beaches represent a real alternative for those who do not want to give up the sea in the company of their pets. With towels, toys, and plenty of energy, more and more owners are leaving paw prints on the sand of Tenerife.
