María Dolores Corujo: “While the far-right entrenches itself in hatred, the politics of rights, respect, and democracy has triumphed in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands”
This Monday, the PSOE of Lanzarote condemned the propaganda action organised by the far-right platform Hazte Oír at Playa Bastián, near the La Mareta Residence, where the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, is enjoying a few days of rest.
For the socialists, this action, based on hatred and provocation, “does not represent Lanzarote or the Canary Islands,” and is part of the “coordinated noise of the far-right and its media satellites to poison political life.”
The Secretary-General of the PSOE and Member of Congress, María Dolores Corujo, pointed out that “Lanzarote is a welcoming, diverse, and respectful land that has shown at the polls that it suffers from and rejects hate speech. In the last general elections, the Socialist Party was the most voted force both in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, precisely because we represent a style of politics based on rights, coexistence, and the defence of the common interest.”
Corujo linked this action by Hazte Oír to the “climate of tension that some have been trying to force upon Lanzarote for some time,” and recalled the “ridiculous and unfortunate statements” made by the President of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, and the President of the PP of Lanzarote, “who have shown no reluctance to even use the holidays of the Prime Minister to sow noise, disinformation, and division.”
“That Pedro Sánchez spends a few days of rest at La Mareta should not trouble anyone who respects democracy, especially given that we are talking about an official State residence,” added the socialist leader.
The PSOE of Lanzarote defends the right of all individuals, including public authorities, to rest freely and without being targeted by campaigns orchestrated by radical organisations that have repeatedly shown their contempt for democratic values.
“What should concern us as a society,” concludes Corujo, “is the rise of intolerance disguised as freedom of expression, and the normalisation of discourses that only seek to divide and confront.”
