“Jessica de León’s Political Blindness Has Exacerbated the Housing Crisis in Fuerteventura”

The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura highlights the work of the Ministry of Housing, which has recently uncovered 934 illegal holiday homes in Fuerteventura. This irregularity directly affects the availability and rental prices of housing on the island, making it increasingly difficult for local families to find a home.

Manuel Hernández, PSOE deputy for Fuerteventura, stated that there is a problem of “political blindness” within the Tourism Department regarding the disappearance of rental homes and the subsequent irrational price increases. He blamed this blindness, represented by Councillor Jessica de León, for worsening the housing situation in Fuerteventura due to her irresponsible management of holiday rental regulations.

La Oliva ranks as the fourth municipality in the Canary Islands with the highest number of tourist homes being marketed illegally (484), followed by Antigua (216), Pájara (116), Tuineje (60), and Puerto del Rosario (58).

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda (Mivau) has informed major digital platforms about the existence of 8,698 illegal tourist apartments in the Canary Islands, of which 934 are located in Fuerteventura. They have been instructed to immediately remove these listings from their sites, thereby taking these properties out of the tourist market.

The Socialist deputy believes that the order to remove advertisements for these properties from tourism exploitation is “a concrete, effective, and real measure,” in stark contrast to the uncertainties surrounding the actions of the Government of the Canary Islands (CC-PP) regarding housing policy. “We do not know what they are doing, if they are doing anything at all, because even measures as obvious as addressing illegal rental properties by simply verifying their compliance with the law have been resolved by the Ministry from Madrid.”
