Tías Town Hall Takes Charge of Palm Tree Maintenance

Tías Town Hall Takes Action to Preserve Palm Trees After Years of Neglect

The Town Hall of Tías announced on Wednesday that it has taken on the conservation and maintenance of palm trees situated around Hospiten and the LZ-505 road, after years of neglect by the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

The Mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, the First Deputy Mayor, Nicolás Saavedra, and the Councillor for the Environment, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, visited the affected area, which is undergoing urgent intervention due to a lack of phytosanitary treatments, irrigation, and removal of dead specimens by the island administration, resulting in the loss of a significant portion of this natural heritage.

Ongoing Maintenance Efforts

Currently, the Town Hall is carrying out pruning, plant-endotherapy treatments to combat the Diocalandra frumenti pest, as well as felling and removing dead palm trees in various locations.

Work is being conducted around the Puerto del Carmen Clean Point, including the pruning and treatment of 35 living palm trees and the felling of 10 dead ones. Additionally, in the area between the LZ-505 road and the service road to Hospiten, 40 living palm trees are being pruned and treated, along with the removal of 108 dead palm trees.

Furthermore, interventions are also taking place near Lanzarote Golf Puerto del Carmen, with the pruning and treatment of 26 living palm trees and the felling of 36 dead ones; at the link between the road and the bypass, with the pruning and treatment of 21 palm trees and the felling of 7 dead ones; as well as the pruning and treatment of one living palm tree alongside the felling of 36 dead palm trees in the same vicinity.

A Municipal Effort to Preserve Natural Heritage

Mayor José Juan Cruz stated, “In light of the Cabildo’s inaction, we have decided to intervene with municipal funds to save the palm trees that are still alive and ensure their conservation. We could not continue to allow this natural heritage, which forms part of our landscape and the identity of our municipality, to be lost.”

Through these actions, the Town Hall of Tías reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection, the care of green spaces, and the preservation of natural heritage, despite the fact that these responsibilities fall under the jurisdiction of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
