Tinajo has officially unveiled the programme for the festivities in honour of the Virgin of Sorrows, the patron saint of Lanzarote. The events will run until 15th September and feature a wide array of religious, cultural, sports, and leisure activities. Mayor Jesús Machín invited residents and visitors from across the Canary Islands and beyond to partake in a celebration that “is an essential part of our island identity.”
The presentation event took place outside the Church of Los Dolores, with the participation of the Councillor for Festivities, Jonathan Pérez Olivero; the Insular Counsellor for Craftsmanship, Aroa Revelo; the president of CD Tinajo, who will be this year’s announcer, Miguel Ángel Tejera; and the parish priest of the municipality, Francisco José García.
Main Attractions
One of the main highlights will be the 36th Insular Craft Fair, held from 10th to 15th September, featuring around 120 artisans from across the Canary Islands. Counsellor Aroa Revelo emphasised the excitement surrounding the fair and presented a promotional video for the Romería de Los Dolores, starring Canarian comedians Darío López and Nacho Peña.
The fair will officially open on Wednesday, 10th September at 17:30, and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to Mancha Blanca, serving as a platform for traditional crafts and a meeting point for the community.
A Diverse Programme for All Ages
The festivities commenced on 1st September with sports championships and workshops, complemented by children’s activities, hiking routes, concerts, and comedy events. The official opening will take place on Tuesday, 9th September, led by CD Tinajo in their 50th anniversary, featuring musical performances by Ciro Corujo, Adrián Niz, and Alexis Lemes.
On Thursday, 11th September, the comedian Yanely Hernández and Guarapo Gomero will take the stage, coinciding with “Children’s Day” and special prices at the funfair.
Friday, 12th September, will host the 35th Nanino Díaz Cutilla Folklore Gathering, featuring groups from all the islands, including the Coros y Danzas of Arrecife, Los Arrieros from La Palma, and Calicanto from Lanzarote, introduced by Yeray Rodríguez.
On Saturday, 13th September, the traditional pilgrimage in honour of the patron saint will take place, followed by the Dance of the Pilgrim. Sunday, 14th September, will showcase one of the main events of the festivities: a concert by singer Vanesa Martín, scheduled for 21:00, followed by a popular dance with orchestras Grupo Bomba and Banda Nueva.
On Monday, 15th September, a solemn Eucharist will be celebrated at 11:00, presided over by Monsignor José Mazuelos Pérez. The day will also include the closing of the Craft Fair, a concert featuring Los Sabandeños, Olga Cerpa, and Mestisay, culminating in a performance by local artist Rosana Arbelo at 21:00.
