Tourism Boom Continues in Gran Canaria with Record Spending

Record Revenue for the Second Quarter

In the second quarter of this year, Gran Canaria recorded a “historic” tourism revenue of €1,179,378,882.60, representing a 12.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024, which saw earnings of €1,047,208,667.30, as reported by the island council on Monday.

The growth in revenue coincides with the arrival of 890,633 tourists, which is an 11.2% increase year on year. Visitors also stayed longer, with an average stay rising from 9.44 to 9.71 days, and the average spending increased to €1,324, or €162.20 per day.

Strategic Focus on Revenue

Carlos Álamo, the Tourism Councillor of Gran Canaria, regarded these figures as evidence of the effectiveness of the destination’s strategy. He highlighted “the technical work being undertaken by the department, based on the strategic plan designed for the 2021-2025 period that prioritises revenue over the volume of arrivals.”

The council has noted that, on a regional level, Gran Canaria leads in statistics related to spending per tourist, spending per trip, and length of stay.

Significant Growth in Accommodation Revenue

Furthermore, the second quarter data from the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) and Promotur reveals a substantial increase in accommodation revenue, amounting to €540,888,239.06, up by 16%. The category known as “Other Tourist Expenses” also saw significant growth, generating €347,075,920.03, a 24% increase.

The council has particularly noted the spending patterns of different nationalities. National tourists increased their spending by 15.42%, while German tourists’ spending rose by 11.10%. Tourists from the UK accounted for the largest volume, totalling €302,744,174.31 but saw a slight decrease of 0.59%. Nordic tourists, on the other hand, increased their spending by an impressive 78.91%.

Additionally, in the categories of Accommodation and Other Tourist Expenses, increases were observed across all countries, while in the Transport category, Nordic countries reported a substantial rise of 122%, contrasting with decreases from Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.
