Special Traffic Measures for ‘Car-Free Day’ and ‘Bike Festival’

Traffic Disruptions in Santa Cruz and Las Palmas

In celebration of ‘Car-Free Day’ in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the ‘Bike Festival’ in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, both municipalities have implemented special measures as part of the European Mobility Week 2025. This includes the closure of roads and the removal of parking in the affected areas.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

For another year, the Avenida Marítima will be open for cyclists. The event will start at the Belén María roundabout at 10:00 am, with a procession setting off an hour later. The route will cover the Avenida Marítima and will conclude at the Fuente Luminosa.

The Local Mobility and Security Councils have organised a special traffic operation, which will involve road closures divided into three sectors: Puerto, Avenida Marítima, and Fuente Luminosa.

  • Puerto Sector: Roads including Doctor Antonio Jorge Aguiar, Doctor Juan Domingo Pérez (southbound), and Juan Rejón (between Calle 22 de Mayo de 1986 and Doctor Juan Domínguez Pérez) will be closed from 08:00 to 13:00. The closure of Juan Rejón between Doctor Antonio Jorge Guerra Navarro and Benartemi will take place from 09:00 to 12:00.
  • Avenida Marítima Sector: Closures between Belén María roundabout and Muelle Las Palmas will occur southbound from 09:00 to 15:00. All access routes will also be affected.
  • Fuente Luminosa Sector: Road closures will be in effect from 09:00 to 15:00 in the area surrounding Alcalde Ramírez Bethencourt Avenue, and associated streets near the circuit formed by Venegas, Murga, and Doctor Francisco Pérez Pérez.

The Local Police will begin clearing vehicles from 22:00 on Saturday, 20 September, in various streets including the aforementioned Doctor Antonio Jorge Aguiar, Plaza Fuero Real de Gran Canaria, and Avenida Alcalde Ramírez Bethencourt.

The Fuente Luminosa area will offer festivities for attendees, featuring live music, games, workshops for children, and a food area. A dedicated circuit will also run between Alcalde Ramírez Bethencourt Street, Venegas, Fuero Real, and Muelle Las Palmas.

Additionally, the Cleaning Department, through the Municipal Cleaning Service, will deploy cleaning teams from 09:00 to 17:00 to ensure a smooth experience during the Bike Festival.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the ‘Car-Free Day’ will take place from 10:00 to 13:00. According to the council, it is necessary to close a section of the Avenida Marítima between Turboglorieta de Hacienda (junction with Avenida San Sebastián) and the Via Litoral tunnel.

The Avenida Francisco la Roche (Avenida de Anaga) will also be closed between Avenida Marítima/Vía Litoral tunnel and Rambla de Santa Cruz, necessitating the raising of security bollards to enhance event safety.

The event will feature skills zones for cyclists and other wheeled sports designed to engage attendees.

  • Zone 1: A skills practice area located between number 33 and 37 of Avenida Anaga, offering a learning circuit and pump track.
  • Zone 2: Tennis activities coordinated by the Insular Tennis Federation at number 33.
  • Zone 3: A skating area located between numbers 24 and 32.
  • Zone 4: A sports area between the tunnel exit and number 23.

The Via Litoral tunnel will also be closed, and right-hand turns from Rambla de Santa Cruz to Avenida Francisco La Roche will be prohibited. Furthermore, right turns from República Honduras Street to Avenida Anaga will be disabled.

Consequently, all parking along Avenida Anaga will be suspended from 06:00 to 15:00 on the day of the event.

The council has suggested alternative routes to navigate around the closures for residents aiming to reach neighbourhoods like Anaga and Playa de Las Teresitas.
