Tributes Paid Following the Passing of Juan José Santana de León, First Democratic Mayor of Haría

The council’s ruling group has declared three days of mourning and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.

The council of Haría is deeply saddened by the passing of Juan José Santana de León, the first democratic mayor of Haría, who died on Thursday, 28 August. In response, three days of mourning have been declared until Sunday, 31 August, accompanied by the municipal flag being flown at half-mast.

An extraordinary plenary session was convened to express condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones, as well as to commemorate his contributions as an educator and politician. A minute’s silence was observed, and it has been agreed to designate him as the adopted son of the municipality.

“We have lost a person who undoubtedly contributed greatly to the growth of Haría, and indeed to the entire island of Lanzarote, through his tireless work and dedication. The council stands ready to support the family,” emphasised Mayor Alfredo Villalba.

Juan José Santana de León was born in Máguez in May 1944. He completed his studies in teaching and, years later, began his political career as a councillor in the council in 1971, serving as the second deputy mayor before becoming mayor the following year.

Santana de León held this position until the end of the Spanish transition. Additionally, he was one of the townsfolk who established the Pro Construction Committee, which facilitated the building of the Máguez chapel. For many years, he also served as the president of the Management Board of the Insular Water Consortium of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
