Coalición Canaria Lanzarote has expressed its sorrow over the passing of Juan José Santana de León (1944-2025), an emblematic figure in both politics and public life on the island.

Born in Máguez (Haría), Santana served as the democratic mayor of the municipality from 1972 to 1983 and was a council member of the Cabildo in the 1970s, as well as a representative in the Canary Islands’ Preautonomous Board. He later resumed his role as an island councillor from 1995 to 2007.

His commitment to education saw him work as a teacher in Haría from 1969 to 2005, instilling cultural and social values that extended beyond the classroom. He also promoted Lanzarote’s identity through organisations such as the Fundación Canaria José Clavijo y Fajardo and the Friends of Wine and Cheese Association.

The Secretary General of CC Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, remarked that “Juan embodied a profound commitment to Lanzarote, its people, and its identity. His legacy will endure as an example of dedication and public service.”

The chapel of rest is set up at the Haría Mortuary and will remain open until 29 August, when the funeral mass will be held at the church of Ntra. Sra. de la Encarnación. Following this, his cremation will take place at the Enalta Crematorium.

Santana leaves behind a political and human legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of Lanzarote residents.

Condolences from Cabildo and PSOE

Meanwhile, the Cabildo of Lanzarote issued a statement of condolence on Thursday, while the PSOE of Lanzarote expressed their heartfelt condolences for the passing of Juan Santana, honorary president of Coalición Canaria, extending a warm embrace to his family, friends, and organisation members.
