UD Lanzarote Crowned Champions of LVI San Ginés Tournament After Penalty Shootout Victory

Last week, UD Lanzarote, the Lanzarote team, held its presentation event at La Recova, presided over by Mayor Yonathan de León. Last night, they triumphed in Arrecife, securing victory against Xerez in the final of the LVI San Ginés Tournament 2025, the oldest summer tournament in the Canary Islands and one of the longest-running in Spain.

The red-and-white team faced Xerez CD in the final, which was decided by penalties. With this latest victory in the capital of Lanzarote, UD Lanzarote wraps up three pre-season tournaments, winning all three under the new management of coach Ángel López and his technical team.

Mayor Congratulates UD Lanzarote

Mayor Yonathan de León, currently away from the island, extended his congratulations to UD Lanzarote through a press release, commending the participating clubs: Xerez Club Deportivo, UD San Sebastián de los Reyes, and CD Tenerife “B” in men’s football, as well as the players from the women’s teams Orientación Marítima, Inter Playa Honda, and CD Tinajo for their participation in the women’s triangular tournament. The mayor, who wore the UD Lanzarote shirt in his youth, remarked on the strong passion for football in Lanzarote, highlighting the significance of this tournament amidst the festive events celebrating Arrecife’s patron saint.

Gratitude from Tourism and Sports Councillor

The Councillor for Tourism, Commerce and Sports, Eli Merino, who attended all the matches, expressed her congratulations to UD Lanzarote, thanking them for their significant collaboration in organising the tournament. She reinforced her commitment, alongside the entire Government team, to ensure the San Ginés Football Tournament remains a feature of future San Ginés festivities.

Eli Merino personally congratulated all the players present at the tournament, expressing her appreciation for the support and collaboration that contributed to the tournament’s success. She acknowledged the participating clubs, the Interinsular Football Federation of Las Palmas, the Uco Arrocha Seminar, UD Lanzarote, the Referees Committee, the Island Sports Service, the Island Councillor for Sports, Juan Monzón, the Cacts, the Lanzarote Society for External Promotion, and its CEO Hector Fernández for their support in making the tournament a success.

A Celebration for Athletes

Yesterday, the Arrecife City Council hosted a celebration for 400 athletes, representing all the participating clubs, organisers, directors, and technical teams, during which trophies were awarded. This gathering allowed all players to share a friendly dinner as the tournament’s conclusion, hosted at a local restaurant in the capital of Lanzarote.

Conclusion of the San Ginés Festivities

The sports programming for the San Ginés festivities concluded last night with the final of the San Ginés Tournament, held at the Ciudad Deportiva Lanzarote, which has inaugurated a new grass pitch. This marks the end of a robust schedule of sporting events that have contributed to the resounding success of the San Ginés festivities, showcasing high levels of participation and quality across various events including sports, music, culture, folklore, and youth activities.
