UD Lanzarote Crowned Champions of LVI San Ginés Tournament

UD Lanzarote, a team from Lanzarote, presented itself last week at La Recova in an event led by Mayor Yonathan de León. Last night, they secured the championship against Xerez in the LVI San Ginés Tournament 2025, the oldest summer tournament in the Canary Islands and one of the most longstanding in Spain.

The team faced Xerez CD in the final, which was decided by penalties. With this latest victory in the capital of Lanzarote, UD Lanzarote has completed three pre-season tournaments, winning them all under the new management of coach Ángel López and his technical team.

Mayor Congratulates the Teams

Mayor Yonathan de León, currently away from the island, has conveyed his congratulations to UD Lanzarote on their triumph. He also expressed his commendations to Xerez Club Deportivo, UD San Sebastián de los Reyes, and CD Tenerife “B” for their participation in the men’s football category, as well as the players from the women’s teams Orientación Marítima, Inter Playa Honda, and CD Tinajo for competing in the triangular women’s event at the San Ginés tournament. The mayor, who once wore the UD Lanzarote jersey in his youth, noted the strong football culture in Lanzarote and emphasised the importance of hosting this tournament during the major sporting events of the Arrecife patronal festivities.

Commitment to Future Tournaments

Eli Merino, the Councillor for Tourism, Commerce, and Sports, who attended all the matches, congratulated UD Lanzarote, expressing her gratitude for their significant collaboration in organising the tournament. She reinforced her commitment, alongside the entire Government team, to ensure the San Ginés Football Tournament remains a fixture in future editions of the San Ginés festivities.

Merino personally congratulated all the players present at the tournament, acknowledging their support and collaboration in making the San Ginés Tournament a resounding success. She extended her thanks to the participating clubs, the Inter-Island Football Federation of Las Palmas, the Uco Arrocha seminary, UD Lanzarote, the Referees Committee, the Insular Sports Service, the council’s sports advisor Juan Monzón, the Cacts, the Lanzarote Society for External Promotion, and its CEO Héctor Fernández for their assistance in the tournament’s success.

Celebration for Athletes

Yesterday, the Arrecife City Council held an event to honour 400 athletes, representing all participating clubs in the tournament, along with organisers, directors, and technical teams. During the event, trophies were awarded, and all participants enjoyed a friendly dinner as a conclusion to the tournament, hosted at a restaurant in the capital of Lanzarote.

The sports programme for the San Ginés festivities concluded last night with the final of the San Ginés Tournament, held at the Lanzarote Sports City, which featured a new grass pitch. This wraps up a robust schedule of sporting events that have significantly contributed to the overall success of the San Ginés festivities, showcasing high participation and quality across all sports, music, cultural, folkloric, and youth events.
