UD Lanzarote Triumphs in LVI San Ginés Tournament After Penalty Shootout Victory Over Xerez

The UD Lanzarote team, hailing from Lanzarote, held its presentation last week at La Recova, an event presided over by Mayor Yonathan de León. Last night, in Arrecife, the team secured victory against Xerez in the final of the LVI San Ginés Tournament 2025, the oldest summer tournament in the Canary Islands and one of the most established in Spain.

Final Match Details

The red-and-white team faced Xerez CD in a tense final that ultimately went to penalties. With this latest triumph in the capital, UD Lanzarote has now won three pre-season tournaments, achieving a clean sweep under the new management of coach Ángel López and his technical staff.

Mayor’s Congratulations

Mayor Yonathan de León, currently away from the island, extended his congratulations to UD Lanzarote for their victory. He also recognised the participation of Xerez Club Deportivo, UD San Sebastián de los Reyes, and CD Tenerife “B” in the men’s football category, as well as the female teams Orientación Marítima, Inter Playa Honda, and CD Tinajo for their involvement in the women’s triangular tournament during the San Ginés festival. The mayor, who once wore the UD Lanzarote shirt in his youth, acknowledged the strong footballing culture on the island and highlighted the importance of this tournament amidst the vibrant sports events of Arrecife’s patronal celebrations.

Support from the Council

Eli Merino, the Councillor for Tourism, Trade, and Sports, who attended all the matches, praised UD Lanzarote for their collaboration in organising the tournament. She reiterated her commitment, along with the entire government team, to ensure that the San Ginés Football Tournament continues in future editions of the celebrations.

Acknowledgements

Merino personally congratulated all players participating in the tournament, expressing her gratitude for their support, which contributed to the event’s success. She also acknowledged the contributions from the participating clubs, the Interinsular Football Federation of Las Palmas, the Uco Arrocha Seminary, the Committee of Referees, the Island Sports Service, Insular Sports Councillor Juan Monzón, the Cacts, and the Lanzarote Society for External Promotion, represented by its CEO, Héctor Fernández, for their support.

A Celebration for Athletes

The Arrecife City Council hosted a celebratory event yesterday for 400 athletes, bringing together representatives from all participating clubs, organisers, executives, and technical teams. During this gathering, trophies were awarded. All players shared a friendly dinner, marking the end of the tournament at a local restaurant in Lanzarote’s capital.
