Upcoming Community Meetings to Shape La Laguna’s III Strategic Plan for Gender Equality

This reflects a commitment made by the City Council with the organisations that form the Women’s Council.

The Equality, Women, and LGBTQI department of La Laguna City Council has planned four community meetings throughout September to gather citizens’ contributions to enrich the draft of the III Strategic Plan for Effective Equality between Men and Women in the municipality.

Dailos González, the municipal councillor in charge of the department, stated that, “with this measure, we are fulfilling one of the commitments made with social entities during the last Women’s Council meeting.” He also noted that “the document has already undergone an initial participatory process, ensuring effective and direct involvement from our residents in this future management tool.”

The local councillor highlighted that “the City Council of La Laguna has been effectively managing the first and second Equality Plans over the past few years, which have served as a reference point to consolidate initiatives that were proven effective previously and to identify and address gaps in earlier versions.”

The scheduled dates and locations for these meetings are the Punta del Hidalgo Citizen Centre (17th September), the El Tranvía Citizen Centre (18th September), the San Jerónimo Citizen Centre (24th September), and the Anchieta CEDA Disability Entities Centre (25th September). In all instances, the meetings will take place from 17:00 to 18:30 hours. At this point, Dailos González expressed gratitude for the involvement of the Citizen Participation Area of the Council, which has provided substantial support in arranging these meeting spaces.

The III Strategic Plan for Effective Equality between Men and Women in La Laguna is based on prior diagnostics, revealing the current situation in the municipality regarding this issue, with insights gathered from interviews and group sessions, studies on the concerns, problems, and needs of the population, and contributions from the Barometer co-created by the Economic and Social Forum (FES) and the University of La Laguna (ULL).

Furthermore, the plan includes a proposal of measures to combat any form of gender discrimination across various professional sectors and to promote a gender perspective across all municipal policies and actions.

The plan also emphasises the need to create a system for the periodic monitoring and evaluation of its implementation through an intersectional working group, an interdepartmental Equality Commission, and, of course, the Municipal Women’s Council of La Laguna.

It is important to note that this Council serves as an advisory body, providing consultation and monitoring of municipal management in all actions impacting the promotion of equal opportunities between men and women. It also acts as a channel to encourage and strengthen women’s participation in civic life and coordination on equality policies among its member groups.

Once the draft of the Plan is finalised by the Equality, Women, and LGBTQI department of La Laguna City Council, it will be submitted to the Council’s Plenary for a vote and final approval.
