Urgent Call from CEIP Playa Honda AMPA: Families Forced to Fund Basic Educational Infrastructure

Full statement from the AMPA Alisios of CEIP Playa Honda:

Serious Lack of Space at CEIP Playa Honda

The AMPA Alisios of CEIP Playa Honda wishes to publicly convey the serious situation regarding the lack of space affecting the school. Currently, families and students lack sufficient infrastructure to develop educational and extracurricular activities in acceptable conditions. Since months ago, we have sought collaboration and solutions from the Education Department of the San Bartolomé Town Hall, the Insular Directorate of Education, and the Education Council of the Government of the Canary Islands. However, we have received no response, despite the urgency of the issue and the direct detriment it poses to the students.

Proposed Alternative Solutions

In light of this institutional silence and with the sole aim of ensuring our children have an appropriate environment, we have considered an alternative: the acquisition of a modular space, which would cost €8,000.

This situation places us in an unacceptable paradox: in a public space, families are compelled to resort to private investment —through sponsorship or crowdfunding— to meet basic needs that should be guaranteed by the Administration.

The current legislation clearly recognises the obligations of educational administrations:
● The LOE/LOMLOE (Organic Law 2/2006, amended by Law 3/2020) establishes in its Articles 118 to 120 that families have the right to participate in the management of schools and that AMPA groups should have adequate spaces, material and financial support to fulfil their roles.

● The Canary Islands Education Law (Law 6/2014) and Decree 81/2010 reinforce this obligation:
○ The Administration is required to provide sufficient infrastructure and financially support parent and family associations.

○ Educational centres must guarantee AMPA groups a physical space for their activities and facilitate the organisation of extracurricular activities.

Call to Action

Therefore, if families must privately fund what should be assured by public institutions, this constitutes a breach of these legal obligations and a violation of the right to a quality and equitable public education.

📢 Our Appeal:
● To the relevant institutions, to react immediately, take responsibility, and ensure our students receive the educational conditions mandated by law.

● To civil society, businesses, and individuals, to assist in financing this modular space through sponsorship or crowdfunding, should the administrations continue to provide no response.

We are not asking for luxuries, just the essentials: a dignified place where our children can learn, coexist, and grow.

Now more than ever, we find ourselves in a “backwards world”: families forced to privately fund the deficiencies of public education instead of receiving support from the administrations.
