Six Arrested Following Violent Brawl in San Cristóbal
Incident Details
On Wednesday, the National Police arrested six individuals from two rival groups in connection with a violent brawl that took place in the San Cristóbal district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The altercation arose from “personal grievances,” and officers intervening in the incident seized prohibited weapons and blunt objects. They also noted the use of martial arts, leading to the possibility of charges for public disorder, as reported by the Canary Islands Police Headquarters on Friday.
Police Response
Emergency services were alerted following a call reporting that several individuals had been assaulted in a public space. Officers from the Public Security Unit (UPR) and Riot Control Unit (GOR) arrived on the scene, where they interviewed the victims. This led to the arrest of one individual on serious charges of threats and injuries, along with the seizure of a butterfly knife, which is deemed a prohibited weapon.
Investigation Findings
During the investigation, police accessed social media footage that captured the beginning of the brawl, confirming it was an altercation between two distinctly identified groups with prior personal and romantic conflicts.
The recordings also revealed one participant wielding a blunt object, while others used sticks, stones, knives, and other bladed weapons, coupled with the martial arts knowledge of some involved.
Serious Threat to Public Safety
The severity of the incident, which jeopardised the safety and lives of several individuals, classified it as a public disorder, posing a serious threat to public safety and order.
After meticulous efforts to locate and identify those involved, police successfully detained all six suspects, who have since been remanded for judicial proceedings.
