Yaiza Initiates LED Streetlight Replacement Project for Enhanced Energy Efficiency Using Solar Technology

The project set to commence in Cortijo Viejo (Puerto Calero) will replace conventional public lighting with solar-powered LED technology. Óscar Noda emphasises “better performance, reduced environmental impact, and lower consumption and maintenance costs.”

New Steps in Energy Efficiency

The Yaiza Town Council is taking a significant step towards energy efficiency by launching a project to replace outdated public lighting in the streets of the Cortijo Viejo plan, Puerto Calero. This initiative will see the installation of solar-powered autonomous LED lights, as confirmed by the Mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, who signed the inter-administrative cooperation agreement on Friday, enabling the Cabildo of Lanzarote to implement the project using Next Generation European funds.

Environmental Impact and Cost Reduction

The Mayor highlights that “we will enhance performance, lessen environmental impact, and reduce electricity bills, along with lower maintenance costs for public lighting.” The work will occur on Barranco del Agua, El Gancho, Barranco Los Dises, El Molino, and Gramillo streets, all located in Cortijo Viejo within the municipal area of Yaiza. A similar initiative is also planned for CEIP Playa Blanca.

Modernisation of Infrastructure

The administration clarifies that this is not an addition of new lighting but rather the renewal and modernisation of existing infrastructure to ensure continued public service under conditions of greater efficiency and sustainability. The project involves the installation of 121 autonomous photovoltaic lights equipped with LED fixtures, tailored to road types and lighting requirements, mounted on new five-metre high poles with specific foundations. Each light unit includes its own photovoltaic module, lithium battery, and electronic control system with sensors and regulators to optimise energy use.
