The Civil Guard has arrested a 21-year-old man in Lanzarote, accused of a drug trafficking offence, after he was caught throwing objects into the Tahiche Penitentiary Centre.
The incident occurred last August when a security guard detected an individual on a scooter, who threw two objects towards the prison facility via surveillance cameras.
The swift intervention of the officers allowed them to intercept the suspect close to the scene, preventing the drugs from reaching their intended destination. Upon recovering the objects, it was confirmed that they were two tennis balls that had been modified to conceal packets of a suspicious substance inside.
The initial analysis confirmed that the substance was hashish pollen, weighing approximately 240 grams.
The arrested individual was taken to the Costa Teguise barracks, where relevant procedures were initiated before he was brought before the Court of Instruction Number 1 in Arrecife. The judicial process is currently ongoing to clarify all details and determine the accused’s responsibilities.
This case highlights the new methods employed to attempt to introduce illegal substances into penitentiary facilities. The use of seemingly innocuous objects, such as tennis balls, has become an increasingly common strategy in various locations across Spain, necessitating enhanced security and surveillance measures in prisons.
