SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Police Response to Domestic Violence
Local police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in coordination with the National Police, intervened last Sunday night in a serious incident of domestic violence when a young man threatened his mother with a machete.
Incident Overview
The intervention began after a report was received indicating that a woman was being assaulted by her son.
Upon arrival, officers found the house apparently empty, but the assailant soon emerged and initially cooperated by claiming no one was inside.
Minutes later, the victim, the mother of the arrested individual, arrived and provided an account of the events, according to a statement from the Local Police.
Details of the Assault
She explained that shortly before, her son had burst into the home and, following a heated argument, had forcibly restrained her, even strangling her with his arms until she was semi-conscious and preventing her from leaving the house.
Afterwards, the assailant left the premises, only to return shortly after armed with a machete, with which he threatened her.
The victim managed to calm him down and, using the pretext of stepping outside to smoke, was able to take refuge in a neighbour’s house from where the police were alerted.
Police Action and Arrest
Thanks to the swift response from both police forces, the situation was brought under control and the suspect was apprehended.
During the operation, several dangerous items were seized, including a machete, knives, and other implements capable of causing serious harm.
In fact, officers located the machete hidden under a car, as the suspect had concealed it there to avoid detection.
Official Statements
The Security Councillor for Santa Cruz City Council, Gladis de León, emphasised the importance of police coordination in such interventions, stating that “the collaboration between the Local Police and the National Police was key to preventing a much more serious outcome.”
She further affirmed that the council’s “commitment” is to “continue working together to ensure the safety of all residents and to act swiftly in cases of domestic violence.”
