The Cabildo of Fuerteventura presents the new connection plan, incorporating 173 new weekly frequencies
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is making strides in enhancing the island’s public transport system with a significant reinforcement of the most popular bus routes. The new connection plan includes 173 new weekly frequencies, over 10,000 additional kilometres of service, and improvements that will strengthen links between the main population centres on the island.
The focus is on strengthening line 3 (Puerto del Rosario-Las Salinas), line 16 (Gran Tarajal-Puerto del Rosario via Antigua), and line 5 (Morro Jable-Costa Calma via hotels), some of the most demanded routes on the island, with frequency increases of up to 62%. Additionally, a new express electric line between Puerto del Rosario, the airport, and Caleta de Fuste has been introduced, along with new services aimed at improving commuting for workers and students.
This was announced by the island president, Lola García, and the Transport Councillor, Luis González. García explained, “We are working to enhance the public transport system in Fuerteventura. Within this strategy, it was essential to reinforce those lines that show the highest demand, improving connections and offering more alternatives for those who use the bus for work, studies, or their daily activities.”
Transport Councillor Luis González highlighted that “the use of public transport has experienced an unprecedented increase, reaching up to 54% year on year. Therefore, we will continue to improve operations for the benefit of users and to meet the actual demands of the majorera community.”
Increased Frequencies on High-Demand Routes
Line 3 (Puerto del Rosario-Las Salinas), one of the most utilised routes on the island, will especially enhance its service during weekends, with an increase of 48.5% on Saturdays and 27.7% on Sundays. Additionally, a new Line 3 Express, operated with electric buses, will reduce travel times between Puerto del Rosario, the airport, and Caleta de Fuste.
Meanwhile, line 16 (Gran Tarajal-Puerto del Rosario via Antigua) will increase its weekly frequencies by nearly 45%, from 127 to 183. Notably, Saturday frequencies will rise from 13 to 27, more than double the current service. This improvement will help alleviate congestion at the preferred stop in Gran Tarajal and strengthen the connection between Antigua and Caleta de Fuste, a demand expressed by residents of the municipality.
Line 5 (Morro Jable-Costa Calma via hotels) will see one of the largest increases across the network, with weekly frequencies rising by 62%, reaching a total of 220. On Sundays, the growth reaches 75%. Furthermore, the new schedules will coordinate with long-distance lines to facilitate travel for workers in the tourism sector during peak times.
Significantly More Kilometres
The planned improvements will result in an increase of over 10,000 weekly kilometres of service and the addition of 18 new drivers to enhance network operations.
Additionally, line 12 (Las Playitas-Gran Tarajal) will add two new services at 15.45 and 16.00 hours, responding to demand from students and workers who frequently use this connection.
