This renovation involved an investment of 6.5 million euros
Mercadona has opened its first ‘Store 9’ on the island of Fuerteventura, specifically in Puerto del Rosario, C/Los Alisios, 11, (La Hondura) 35600 Puerto del Rosario, Las Palmas. This new supermarket provides increased space for fresh products and enhances the shopping experience for its “Chiefs” (as the company internally refers to its customers). The renovation, which involved 31 construction suppliers and employed 135 individuals, represents an investment of 6.5 million euros.
Notable features of this supermarket, which employs 87 staff members, include a comprehensive reorganisation of the layout. It has evolved from a business-oriented structure to a process-oriented one. This transformation enhances the efficiency of the shopping process, making it more seamless and straightforward through a more intuitive organisation of products. Additionally, it improves staff efficiency by reducing movement during restocking and enhancing team coordination.
Central Bakery: Centralisation of Processes and Efficiency
The comprehensive layout reorganisation has led to the establishment of the Central Bakery, where all areas involved in preparing fresh products are consolidated. This centralisation of cutting, cooking, and packaging processes at a single point reinforces the company’s commitment to the highest quality and freshness, providing more space for such products in self-service.
Moreover, it enables more efficient resource management, resulting in energy savings of up to 10% and water consumption reductions of up to 40%.
Innovation and Technical Upgrades of Facilities
In terms of innovation, the store is equipped with a range of electronic devices and collaborative tools that facilitate self-management of the supermarket, optimise decision-making, and streamline processes throughout the supply chain.
The refrigerators feature Aerofoil systems that minimise cold loss to the aisles, thereby enhancing energy efficiency and thermal comfort within the store. Additionally, the company uses CO₂ as a refrigerant, which reduces environmental impact and enables more efficient and sustainable cooling.
Furthermore, there have been technical upgrades to machine rooms and equipment renewals, ensuring better maintenance and higher operational efficiency over the long term.
This reorganisation, process centralisation, and technical enhancements in ‘Store 9’ increase the establishment’s productivity and efficiency. It represents an evolution from the previous store model, known as Store 8, which will be systematically implemented from 2026 to 2033 with a total projected investment of 3.7 billion euros for this transformation.
Quality and Excellence in Service for “The Chief”
In line with the new needs and habits of the “Chiefs,” the store includes a relaxation area for customers. The supermarket is open from Monday to Saturday, from 09:00 to 21:30 hours. It provides 260 parking spaces to facilitate the shopping experience for all customers arriving by car, including 8 spaces for electric vehicles. Additionally, Mercadona has enabled its online shopping service through the website www.mercadona.es.
