Tribute to Former Ingenio Mayor Juan Espino del Toro

The municipality of Ingenio is mourning the loss of Juan Espino del Toro, who served as mayor for five consecutive terms from 1983 to 2002. Espino, who passed away at the age of 86, was a prominent figure in local socialism and played a vital role in the region’s governance.

In a heartfelt statement, Ingenio’s PSOE party expressed their “deep sorrow” over the “irreparable loss” of a key figure in the history of the municipality and Canary Islands socialism. They highlighted his public service and political dedication, noting his significant contributions as both mayor and a councillor for Gran Canaria’s Cabildo from 1983 to 1999.

Espino’s nearly twenty years in office saw major transformations in Ingenio, including modernising infrastructure and improving public services. His approachable nature and dedication to local interests made him a respected leader among generations of residents.

He was also a co-founder of the Mancomunidad del Sureste, working closely with other mayors to foster regional collaboration. This initiative addressed historical challenges and established a shared development model that remains a standard in the Canaries.

The PSOE further remarked on Espino’s commitment to social justice and equality, describing his legacy as one that will continue to inspire future socialist generations in Ingenio and beyond. They extended their condolences to his family, friends, and all those who shared his life’s journey.

“Rest in peace, compañero Juan José,” the statement concluded, honouring his lasting impact on the community.
