The Lanzarote Cabildo has taken decisive action to address the ongoing climate control issues at the Insular Library. Under the direction of Councillor Ascensión Toledo, the necessary reports have been fast-tracked to put the new air conditioning system out to public tender, with a total investment of €949,999.50.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort emphasised the importance of user feedback, stating that “an essential facility for promoting culture and education like the Insular Library must provide an environment conducive to optimal use by patrons and staff.”
This initiative directly responds to community demands. Toledo noted that library users can no longer wait for such a crucial infrastructure upgrade. She highlighted the administration’s commitment to expediting every phase of the project, with the group’s priority being the comfort and safety of the facility.
Delays arose from unfavourable technical reports on improperly submitted designs by the awarded company. Once the technical approval was secured, the department initiated a “fast-track mechanism” to accelerate the legal timeline for the tender process. An urgent report was approved on June 10, allowing for final budget allocation.
The Cabildo has raised the investment to ensure a comprehensive and secure overhaul. The installation work will include new climate control units, removal of outdated systems, and complete replacement of old ducting, wiring, and plumbing.
Following the approval of budget retention and urgent processing of the bid, the Cabildo plans to present the tender for the project shortly.
