The Cabildo Allocates 10 Million Euros to Boost Local Employment and Projects Linked to the Sustainable Development Goals in Tenerife Municipalities
This initiative will enable the 31 municipalities to develop works and services of general and social interest for the second consecutive year, promoting the hiring of unemployed individuals and the sustainable development of the municipalities.
The Cabildo of Tenerife, through the Department of Employment, Education and Youth, will allocate 10 million euros to a new line of grants aimed at the 31 municipalities on the island. This funding is intended to finance projects that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote local employment. The initiative aims to drive actions that have a direct impact on sustainability, social cohesion, and the generation of job opportunities across all municipalities in Tenerife. In the previous round of funding, which also involved an investment of 10 million euros, 521 people were hired.
The President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, emphasised that “this investment represents a strategic commitment to a more sustainable, inclusive, and prepared island to face future economic and social challenges. We want each municipality to have the tools to develop projects that improve the quality of life for residents, generate job opportunities, and contribute to building a more resilient and cohesive Tenerife.”
Dávila added that “collaboration between the Cabildo and the municipalities is essential for these policies to have a real impact on citizens. With this funding, we reinforce the role of local administrations as agents of development, enabling them to promote initiatives that respond to the specific needs of each area.”
The Councillor for Employment, Education and Youth, Efraín Medina, explained that “these projects should not merely add resources to the ordinary tasks of the municipalities; they must become concrete actions capable of generating added value, diversifying the local economy, and fostering equality of opportunity. We want every euro invested to have a transformative effect on the territory and the people.”
Medina emphasised that “employment remains a priority for the Cabildo of Tenerife, and this funding allows us to combine the creation of job opportunities with the improvement of municipalities and the advancement towards a more sustainable development model.”
Funding Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals
The grants will be allocated to projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on environmental preservation and the economic and social development of municipalities. Eligible actions include:
- Enhancement of natural and cultural heritage
- Energy efficiency and renewable energy
- Education for sustainability
- Efficient use of information and communication technologies
- Improvement of waste management
- Water supply and treatment
- Local tourism promotion
- Strengthening of social welfare services
Professional Profiles
One of the main innovations of this funding round is the incorporation of requirements aimed at improving the technical quality of the projects. To this end, municipalities must ensure the hiring of a minimum percentage of qualified personnel—individuals with university degrees, vocational training, or professional certificates—varying according to the population of each municipality. Thus, it will be 25% in locations with up to 10,000 inhabitants, 40% in municipalities between 10,001 and 30,000 inhabitants, and 50% in those exceeding that figure.
Participants must be unemployed individuals over 18 years old, and the announcement includes specific measures to promote equality of opportunity. In this regard, women must represent at least 50% of the hiring undertaken within the framework of the funded projects.
Moreover, priority will be given to young people under 30 years old, including both long-term unemployed individuals and those seeking their first job opportunity, as well as individuals over 30 years old who have been long-term unemployed.
“We want these investments to also improve the employability of participants and offer real opportunities to those facing the greatest challenges in accessing the job market,” stated Medina. “The combination of training, guidance, and work experience will strengthen the professional competencies of participants and enhance their prospects for future employment.”
The funding will cover 100% of the cost of eligible projects up to the maximum limit established for each municipality, facilitating the implementation of actions with a direct impact on the territory and its citizens.
With the launch of these guidelines, the Cabildo of Tenerife reaffirms its commitment to the economic and social development of the island’s municipalities, promoting investment policies that not only generate immediate employment but also prepare citizens for future labour challenges and advance towards a more sustainable and inclusive development model.
