Costa Teguise Celebrates Local Festival Amid Institutional Concerns

On Saturday night, 27 June 2026, Costa Teguise kicked off its festival with an emotional opening ceremony, marking the event’s debut in new dates. Local businesswoman Inma Vilar delivered the opening speech, sharing heartfelt memories and reflections about the community she has long been a part of.

The inaugural night included a performance by the local seniors’ group and paid tribute to those who have shaped the town’s identity over the years, recognising the generations who have witnessed its growth.

Despite the celebrations, many expressed dissatisfaction with the “limited institutional involvement.” A resident highlighted that Costa Teguise, with nearly 9,500 inhabitants, deserves better support for a festival of this significance.

“The Festival Committee has taken on nearly all the organisational responsibilities, even designing promotional materials due to a lack of resources,” they added. Some participating groups have yet to formalise contracts with the council, hindering their ability to promote their acts effectively.

Organisers also noted that the festivities were overshadowed by the coinciding Noche Blanca festival in La Villa de Teguise, diminishing visibility for the local celebrations that reflect the spirit of thousands of residents.

Concerns about safety emerged during the event, with reports of a lack of police presence to regulate traffic, allowing vehicles to enter crowded areas while people, including children, walked nearby.

Despite these challenges, the community’s enthusiasm shone through. Residents and volunteers continue to ensure the festival remains a cherished tradition, reflecting the town’s heritage.

Local residents hope that authorities will address identified shortcomings in future editions by providing necessary support and resources to enhance the festival’s significance for the growing population.
