Paloma Hernández Cerezo, the PSOE senator for Fuerteventura, has assured the strong commitment of the Spanish Government to maintain the maritime connection between Cádiz and Puerto del Rosario. This follows a working meeting with Benito Núñez Quintanilla, the Secretary General of Transport at the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

Paloma Hernández Confirms the State’s Commitment to Tender the Maritime Line Between Cádiz and Puerto del Rosario

Hernández highlighted that the Ministry is already working on the new tender for this strategic route and expresses its intention to ensure that the stopover in Fuerteventura is preserved.

The socialist senator emphasised that this connection is essential for the transport of goods, the supply of Fuerteventura, economic activity, and the mobility of citizens.

Paloma Hernández also recalled that it was the socialist government headed by Pedro Sánchez that, through the tender carried out in 2020, incorporated Fuerteventura into this public service maritime route for the first time. This addressed a historical demand from the island and strengthened its connectivity with the mainland.

“Fuerteventura can be assured that the Ministry fully understands the importance of this line for our island and is working to issue the new tender as soon as possible. This process has been delayed because the Ministry was awaiting the justificatory report required by the Court of Auditors regarding the need for the line. If this report is positive, the tender will proceed, and once it is issued, we hope that companies will come forward to operate this service. We hope that within four months, everything will be resolved,” Hernández stated after meeting with the Secretary General of Transport.

The socialist parliamentarian has advocated for the necessity of continued coordinated efforts between administrations and shipping companies to ensure the sustainability and future viability of this maritime connection. Conversely, she lamented the alarming messages recently circulated by some public officials regarding the future of the line, stating that they are pre-empting the outcome of the tender.

“In contrast to the confrontation exhibited by other political groups, the Government is working from an institutional responsibility, engaging directly with decision-makers and securing concrete commitments to defend the interests of Fuerteventura,” she affirmed.

The socialist senator has committed to ongoing monitoring of the tender process for this maritime connection and has expressed gratitude for the receptiveness and commitment demonstrated by the Ministry of Transport towards the needs of Fuerteventura.
