Quevedo to Receive the Gold Medal of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 23rd June

Honours and Distinctions in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

On the 548th anniversary of its foundation, the City Council will award these distinctions at an institutional event for Honours and Distinctions at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will present the Gold Medal and the titles of Preferred Sons and Daughters, as well as Adoptive Sons and Daughters, to 16 individuals and institutions closely associated with the city, including the singer Quevedo.

A Celebratory Event

The City Council announced in a statement that these awards will take place on 23 June at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium.

In a council meeting last May, the decision was made to grant eight Gold Medals to various entities, including:

– Hospital San José de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
– Asociación Bientratar
– Coral Cantata del Real Club Victoria
– Federación de Agrupaciones Folklóricas de Gran Canaria (FAFGC)
– Clipper
– Astilleros Canarios (Astican)
– Asociación de Vecinos Artemi

Additionally, the singer Pedro Luis Domínguez Quevedo, known artistically as Quevedo, will receive the city’s Gold Medal.

Distinctions for Celebrated Individuals

On the eve of San Juan, the following individuals will be honoured as Preferred Sons and Daughters of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria:

– Composer and conductor of Barrios Orquestados, José Brito López
– Footballer Jonathan Viera Ramos
– Dancer and choreographer Dácil González Ruiz

Posthumously, the distinguished multidisciplinary artist Roberta Marrero Gutiérrez will also be recognised with this honour.

Adoptive Sons and Daughters

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will additionally award four titles of Adoptive Sons and Daughters, which will go to:

– The physicist, engineer, and science communicator Javier Santaolalla Camino
– Head of the Pulmonology Service at Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín and professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), José Antonio Caminero Luna
– Vice-President of UNICEF Committee Canarias, Nereida Castro Martín
– Professor of Physical Education Cecilia Dorado García (ULPGC)
