Tenerife’s Gastronomy Shines at Monaco Cultural Event

Tenerife’s culinary scene received international acclaim at the Spanish Gastronomic and Cultural Days, held from 17 to 21 June in Monaco. Organised by the Spanish Embassy and the Cultural Affairs Directorate of the Principality, the event celebrated the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Spain and Monaco, showcasing the island’s gastronomic treasures.

The highlight was the gala dinner on 20 June at the prestigious Café de Paris, attended by several dignitaries, including Prince Albert II of Monaco. Chef Alberto Margallo of San Sebastián 57 in Santa Cruz, crafted a unique menu that highlighted the distinct flavours of Tenerife.

Margallo’s menu featured local staples such as potatoes, mojos, and papaya, paired with a selection of wines from the island’s various denominations. Guests were impressed by the high quality of the dishes, which aligned with Monaco’s culinary standards.

“Events like these are crucial for establishing our presence in high-end markets. They raise awareness for products that are often unknown and demonstrate that Spain offers more than just the mainland,” said Margallo, reflecting on the success of the event.

The initiative was supported by the Cabildo through Turismo de Tenerife. Lope Afonso, the island’s Vice President and Tourism Councillor, emphasised the significance of showcasing Tenerife on a prestigious platform like Monaco. “It’s a unique opportunity to present the excellence of our cuisine to influential audiences,” he stated.

Afonso noted that culinary excellence is a key differentiator for the destination, enhancing the island’s image through authenticity and local talent.

Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, praised Margallo as “a true ambassador” for the Canary Islands, blending contemporary culinary artistry with the region’s rich gastronomic culture while promoting sustainability and valuable experiences.
