Cabildo and San Miguel Council Strengthen Civil Protection Cooperation
San Miguel de Abona’s Mayor, Arturo González, and the Director of Security and Emergencies, Iván Martín, recently met to discuss updates to the municipality’s emergency plans and the volcanic risk map. This meeting is part of ongoing visits by the Insular Directorate of Security and Emergencies to all municipalities on the island.
The meeting focused on realigning San Miguel’s emergency protocols to enhance disaster preparedness and response. Martín emphasised the need to update the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU) while preserving its unique aspects. He stated that the goal is to create a uniform protocol across municipalities with populations under 50,000 to ensure better coordination during emergencies.
PEMUs will cover more than just volcanic activity; they will also address adverse weather, floods, wildfires, seismic risks, and pollution. “PEMUs must be capable of addressing all potential scenarios, not just one,” said Martín.
The duo also discussed the volcanic risk map and San Miguel’s role in potential emergencies, whether as a source or receiver of aid. They noted the municipality’s accommodation facilities and other relevant infrastructure.
Another key point addressed was a new civil protection plan focused on promoting prevention and self-protection among residents, community groups, and public officials. Martín announced an upcoming training initiative to educate residents on emergency procedures, including evacuation routes and shelters for people and animals, particularly targeting vulnerable populations.
Finally, Martín highlighted a comprehensive reorganisation of the Civil Protection service, which includes integrating municipal organisations into its framework. This integration aims to create a reliable communication channel for improved coordination in emergencies, supported by a new application currently in testing.
Martín stressed that the intention behind these meetings is to proactively manage any potential situations. “It’s vital to collaborate effectively while respecting the unique characteristics of each area,” he added.
Mayor González reiterated that ensuring the safety of San Miguel residents is a top priority and emphasised the importance of working closely with the Cabildo to enhance prevention and update response protocols for any crises that may arise.
