Canary Islands to Receive €83 Million for Storm Repairs
The Canary Islands will receive €83 million of the €92 million allocated by the Spanish government for infrastructure repairs following damage caused by Storm Therese. Announced by Ángel Víctor Torres, the Minister of Territorial Policy, this funding aims to support local councils and cabildos (island councils) in restoring affected facilities.
The aid, published in the Official State Gazette, is intended to finance repairs to municipal infrastructure and island and provincial road networks impacted by civil protection emergencies between 10 February and 30 March 2026.
Torres highlighted that the Canary Islands were the hardest-hit autonomous community, stating that the central government would cover up to 50% of the repair costs for works carried out by local authorities.
The Cabildo of Tenerife estimates damages over €33 million, while Gran Canaria reports more than €28 million in losses. La Gomera’s damages are estimated at €42.7 million.
“This is excellent news for Canary councils,” Torres said, reminding local administrations that they can submit their applications until 3 pm on 30 July.
The announced funding, totalling €92,017,358 nationwide, is available to provinces, cabildos, island councils, and autonomous communities including the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, and others.
The aid will cover up to 50% of costs for projects that restore municipal infrastructure, facilities, and services, as well as provincial roads damaged due to natural disasters. Applications can be submitted electronically via the ‘AURA-Subvenciones a EELL ante catástrofes naturales’ platform on the Ministry’s website, starting from 9 am the day after the announcement is published.
