Residents of Arrecife Report Alleged Irregularities and Severe Disturbances from Construction on José Betancort Street – Lanzarote News

Comprehensive statement from the reporting residents:

Residents of José Betancort Street and its surroundings in the centre of Arrecife have raised concerns regarding the impact of construction work ongoing for approximately three months at a site located at number 30 of the street.

The locals assert that the building work is causing significant inconvenience, material damage, and anxiety regarding the safety and health of those living in the adjacent buildings. The construction has resulted in strong vibrations that reportedly affect the structural elements of nearby homes. Residents have observed damage to walls, the emergence of cracks, and shifts that raise concerns about the stability of their properties.

Furthermore, they claim that the disturbances arising from noise and vibrations, which clearly exceed municipal ordinance limits, are adversely affecting their physical and emotional well-being. The residents also express disappointment that, as conveyed by municipal agents, the Local Police currently lack adequately trained personnel and the necessary technical resources to carry out sound measurements for validating the reported noise levels.

Among their main demands is the use of machinery deemed excessive for the size of the site, as well as the absence of systems to reduce vibrations transmitted to adjacent buildings. The residents also voice concerns about cleanliness and waste management issues.

During the demolition activities on the lot and two old neighbouring buildings, materials potentially containing asbestos, typically found in old uralite roofs, were handled. The complainants are calling for the competent authorities to verify whether these actions were carried out in accordance with current regulations and required safety measures. They also assert that sufficient measures were not in place during much of the construction to prevent dust and debris from dispersing into nearby homes, a situation that has allegedly hindered them from opening windows or hanging laundry in courtyards and rooftops.

Additionally, the residents allege a number of administrative and safety irregularities, including a supposed lack of visible information regarding the project promotion, technical direction, and execution timelines, as well as potential violations related to fencing around the site and working hours. Another issue causing concern is the impact on several feline colonies residing in partially demolished buildings.

The residents claim that some animals may have been affected by the construction work and lament the lack of resources available to ensure their protection and relocation by the Town Hall.

Now, the residents demand a thorough investigation into the development of the construction, compliance with urban planning and environmental regulations, and the potential effects caused to homes and quality of life for residents and feline colonies. They also request increased oversight from authorities to ensure that the work is carried out in accordance with the law and the rights of those living nearby.
