The Legacy of Traditional Canary Island Clothing in Tenerife Schools
The legacy of traditional Canary Island clothing is being introduced into classrooms across Tenerife with a clear objective: to ensure that new generations understand these garments are part of the Archipelago’s cultural heritage and that their usage goes far beyond mere popular celebrations.
The Cabildo of Tenerife and the Santa Cruz City Council are spearheading the Canarian Clothing Educational Project, an initiative already implemented in eleven schools within the capital to teach pupils about the history, values, and the importance of preserving traditional costumes.
A Heritage Learned from Childhood
The aim is to educate students on the origins and meanings of Tenerife’s typical clothing, fostering its preservation and promoting correct usage linked to the cultural identity of the Archipelago.
Efraín Medina, the Cabildo’s Councillor for Employment and Education, reminded us that wearing traditional garments passed down from previous generations should not be seen as mere costumes.
“Dressing in the heritage inherited from our island ancestors should not be viewed as a costume, but rather as an essential part of our ancestral legacy,” he stated.
Understanding History to Preserve Traditions
Medina also highlighted the need for training initiatives that enable children and young people to recognise the historical value of these garments and understand their proper usage.
“It is essential that, from the early years of education, our boys and girls learn that wearing the traditional clothing correctly is a way to honour our identity and preserve a legacy that deserves respect and diligence,” he affirmed.
Craftsmanship, Culture, and Identity
Among the planned activities are educational and didactic actions aimed at raising awareness of the processes behind the craft of traditional Tenerife clothing.
Additionally, the project seeks to promote greater social awareness regarding the need to protect and respect the traditional practices associated with these garments, especially as they become increasingly visible during festivals and popular celebrations.
Ensuring Generational Transition
With this initiative, the Cabildo aims to bring cultural heritage closer to younger generations and ensure the transmission of knowledge and traditions across generations.
The island corporation believes that understanding traditional clothing is a key tool for reinforcing collective identity and ensuring that one of the most representative elements of Canary Island culture continues to be part of the future.
