Betancuria’s Municipality Faces Fresh Setback with Council Building Renovation

The municipality of Betancuria “is once again receiving bad news from the Fuerteventura Island Council.” The file for the renovation and completion of the Betancuria Town Hall, “what we call the new Town Hall,” has once again been left void. The file for the renovation and completion of the Betancuria Town Hall has once again been left void.

Since this administrative procedure was initiated by the Island Council in collaboration with the Betancuria Town Hall some years ago, the necessary renovation works have yet to be executed. This project has “been sleeping the sleep of the righteous for 24 years, a whole lifetime. Meanwhile, the residents of the municipality and municipal workers are waiting for the day, not too far off, when this administrative lethargy might end.”

The Town Hall emphasises that Betancuria is classified as a historic-artistic ensemble, where “these types of unsightly constructions do not belong, as they significantly detract from the beauty of our historic capital. The aim is to adapt this building to the historical ensemble of the town of Betancuria and, in turn, to consolidate the municipal offices currently scattered across the town into a single building that meets the specific requirements of a Town Hall. Workers are forced to be dispersed across different locations, causing inconvenience for both them and the residents, who must move from office to office to complete their physical administrative tasks.”

Mayor Enrique Cerdeña states, “This is another blow for the municipality and for the historic centre of Betancuria, after 24 years of neglect, during which various island administrations have assumed the works would begin, while the file for execution has never been resolved…”.

Meanwhile, “the Fuerteventura Island Council continues to come to take the necessary photos, a pose that looks good for show yet does not reflect the reality of the situation in which this building remains submerged.”

The Betancuria Town Hall regrets that as the years go by, this building remains abandoned, affecting the image of the town and causing delays for the local administration, as it cannot have its municipal offices concentrated in one hub.
