Gran Canaria and Tenerife Under Increased Heat Alert

Gran Canaria will be under an orange alert on Monday as temperatures could soar to 37 degrees Celsius. The Canary Islands Government has issued this warning due to high fire risk across both Gran Canaria and Tenerife. A heatwave with dust from the Sahara is expected to affect the region over the coming days.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has extended warnings across the Canary Islands for maximum temperatures this weekend. From Sunday morning, the islands will face extreme heat, prompting the government to declare a pre-alert for high temperatures across the archipelago starting at 8:00 am.

Details of Weather Warnings:

  • Gran Canaria: A yellow alert is in effect on Sunday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, with maximum temperatures reaching 35 degrees in the southeast, south, and west regions, particularly affecting the Tejeda area. On Monday, the alert will rise to orange from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, with temperatures peaking at 37 degrees. Nighttime temperatures will remain high, not dropping below 26 or 27 degrees.

  • Fuerteventura: A yellow alert for high temperatures will be active on Sunday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, continuing into Monday during the same hours. A maximum temperature of 34 degrees is expected, especially in the southeastern interior.

  • Lanzarote: The island will not be on yellow alert on Sunday but will be on Monday, when it could reach 34 degrees in the southeast and interior. The alert starts at 11:00 am and ends at 8:00 pm.

  • Tenerife and La Gomera: Both islands will be under a yellow alert on Monday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, with maximum temperatures anticipated at 34 degrees.
