Canary Islands’ New Community Project Launched in Arrecife
Fernando Clavijo, President of the Canary Islands, visited the Sociocultural Centre of Maneje in Arrecife on Wednesday to witness the launch of the community initiative, +Que Barrios. This project, spearheaded by local singer Rosana Arbelo and supported by the Arrecife Town Hall, aims to promote community engagement through creativity and cultural activities.
Joining Clavijo were several officials, including Oswaldo Betancort, President of the Lanzarote Cabildo, and Echedey Eugenio, Deputy Mayor of Arrecife. Together, they toured the facilities hosting various activities under the +Que Barrios programme.
The initiative marks Arrecife as the first municipality to adopt +Que Barrios, part of a broader social and creative project known as OMOW (Otro Mundo–Nuestro Mundo). The programme aims to boost civic participation through artistic expression and community interaction.
Since its inception weeks ago, +Que Barrios has engaged with schools, local associations, and community groups to design activities inspired by residents’ suggestions. The programme includes workshops, artistic activities, masterclasses, open rehearsals, cultural gatherings, and free festivals, targeting all ages with a focus on community involvement.
This initiative also sees the inclusion of Lanzarote-based professionals and creators to lead many of the planned activities.
Clavijo’s visit highlighted the progress already achieved in Maneje, showcasing the collaborative effort led by Arbelo and participating groups. The project receives support from the Government of the Canary Islands, Arrecife Town Hall, and other local entities dedicated to enhancing the island’s social and economic fabric.
