Business Mobility Take Centre Stage at Workshop in La Laguna
A workshop on “Business Mobility” was held yesterday at Femete’s headquarters in La Laguna, focusing on how companies can assess and reduce the environmental impact of employee travel in the Canary Islands.
The event was part of the INDUCES project, which is funded by the Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Economy, Industry, Trade, and Self-Employment. This initiative aims to help industrial enterprises improve their environmental management and understand their carbon footprint, with a specific focus on workplace mobility.
Ana María Zurita Expósito, the General Director of Industry for the Canary Islands Government, emphasised the importance of joint efforts between public bodies and businesses in transitioning to a more sustainable economy. “We want to support our companies in this transformation by providing tools to move towards sustainable, innovative, and competitive models,” she said. “Projects like INDUCES show that public-private collaboration is vital to facing current environmental challenges.”
Juan Antonio Jiménez Arranz, President of Femete, reinforced the Federation’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Sustainability must be practical and tailored to our businesses. Mobility is a daily challenge for many companies, but it also presents an opportunity to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.”
Jiménez highlighted that the INDUCES project offers tailored support for businesses to identify improvement opportunities through personalised assessments and technical assistance. He encouraged companies to engage in such initiatives and make the most of available resources.
Measuring for Improvement
The technical portion of the workshop included a presentation by Inés Álvarez Benito from the INDUCES project, who explained the role of mobility as a crucial element of an organisation’s environmental footprint. She outlined how to properly identify business-related travel and gather useful information to make informed decisions on enhancing sustainability.
Laura Álvarez Torres, Operations Director at Senda Ecoway, followed with a session on “Labour Mobility in the Canary Industry: From Data to Action.” She provided insights into commuting patterns and described simple methodologies for collecting valuable data to formulate strategies to reduce the carbon footprint linked to employee travel.
The day concluded with Alicia Rodríguez, General Director of Fundación Foresta, discussing “Environmental Compensation Actions and Business Collaboration.” She presented various environmental compensation initiatives and examples of cooperative projects aimed at mitigating industry impacts through restoration and conservation efforts.
The session underscored that sustainable practices must be tailored to each organisation’s needs. Participants agreed that measuring travel related to business activities is a crucial first step in identifying savings opportunities and minimising environmental impact.
The INDUCES project, fully funded by the Canary Islands Government, aims to enhance public-private collaboration to accelerate the Canary Islands’ transition towards a greener economy. Interested businesses can contact the technical team at 922 296 700 or via email at [email protected].
